Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.

We kicked things off at 7:00 am with the pledge from Elizabeth and words of inspiration from Ward.

1 council meeting this month next week
Special meeting of council on 19th for new district maps
Planning Commission met last night
Several meetings have been canceled due to staffing issues
Parks projects ongoing, Goldenrod completed
Denis Blake thanked Rotary at merchant meeting yesterday, 14000 in attendance for Tamalefest, looking at new layout for next year
JPI parking structure is almost finished on new building on Crowther
Everyone counts project coming up. Our area is on the 26th of Jan. 2 sessions one in morning one in evening.

Last night was monthly meeting, 8 in attendance. Next month we will begin having the monthly evening meeting on Tuesday and NO MEETING THE FOLLOWING MORNING
Kevin lost his father this week funeral service next week. Happy to see him and Lorraine last night to convey condolences.

Miss Placentia Miss Yorba Linda program has contacted us, and we will be sponsoring a Miss and a Teen at $300 each. Application coming soon with their platform spelled out for us to evaluate. We will need a group to read over and evaluate for our sponsorship.

Salk vaccine 1954 ( injection )
Sabin vaccine 1961 ( oral ) not use much in US until 2000’s
Many famous people suffered from Polio, Alan Alda, Wilma Rudolph, Frances Ford Coppola
Rotary began involvement with eradication in 1978
1979 6 million children receive vaccine in Philippines
1982 “polio 2005” is born, 1000 cases a day reported,
Vaccinate 500 million kids will cost $100 million. Goal set and Polio Plus born
1988 WHO partners with Rotary as well as UNICEF
2007 Gates Foundation joins the initiative
2019 GAVI alliance joins initiative
3 types of polio each treated differently
Type 2 & 3 have been eradicated
Vaccine Derived Polio now an issue, 580 cases in 2021, 1113 in 2020
Polio Plus Society is at least $100/RY in commitment
